On returning to Australia in the mid-eighties I found myself in a completely disparate environment compared to that of previous years. Though only carrying a rudimentary portfolio it was with some urgency that I sought work from local book publishers. The commissions were often routine and poorly paid but with the passing months I found that necessity had, at times, a silver lining. Practice makes perfect. Time and recognition slowly provided a little more freedom though the financial collapse & subsequent failure of my publishing house to produce 'The Bottle Imp' became, in a sense, the penultimate throw of the dice. From the gentle perspective of time passed I feel grateful for the disciplines learnt through those years.
